Cayman Islands Cancer Society Annual General Meeting 2024

Directors, members and patrons of CICS were treated to a comprehensive annual report

George Town Yacht Club, Grand Cayman, 11th December 2024 – The Cayman Islands Cancer Society (CICS) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on December 11th, marking the culmination of a transformative year dedicated to combating cancer and supporting those affected by the disease within the Cayman Islands.

The AGM brought together members, supporters, and partners to reflect on the achievements of 2024 and to outline the path ahead for 2025. From the launch of ground-breaking initiatives to the success of community events, the year was marked by growth, resilience, and collaboration.

Key Highlights

  1. Fundraising and Community Engagement
CICS continued its tradition of hosting impactful events such as Stride Against Cancer, Catwalk for Cancer, and the Spring Garden Party. These events not only raised over KYD $150,000 but also strengthened community solidarity in the fight against cancer. New events such as The Enchanted Snow-Globe pole and aerial theatrical performance showcased CICS’s commitment to the Cayman community and its many talents in the performing arts.
  2. Expansion of Support Services
This year, CICS introduced new programs like art therapy workshops, journaling groups, and counseling sessions. These initiatives provided emotional and creative outlets for patients and their families, reinforcing the Society’s commitment to wellness support.
  3. Raising the Roof Campaign
A highlight of 2024 was the progress made on the Raising the Roof project, a major expansion of the Society’s headquarters. The new facility will enhance accessibility and services for patients and their families. Key contributors to this initiative included Health City Cayman Islands and the Green Tie Gala, who together have propelled the campaign closer to its goal. Planning has been approved and we hope to break ground in very early 2025.
  4. Financial Aid Impact
The Society provided KYD $573,473 in financial aid to 120 patients, covering treatment-related costs, travel, and essential expenses. Breast cancer accounted for nearly 50% of the aid provided, highlighting the ongoing prevalence of this disease in the community.
  5. Cancer Prevention and Education
CICS conducted 24 educational presentations and organized 10 health screening events, including 72 Pap tests, 41 FIT tests, and 85 PSA screenings. These efforts underscored the importance of early detection and prevention in reducing the burden of cancer.

Collaboration and Partnerships

The Society acknowledged the invaluable partnerships that made these achievements possible. Collaborations with organizations such as the Breast Cancer Foundation(BCF) amplified community impact through joint events and financial support. In particular our HSA workshop entitled “A Patient’s Journey” gave CICS and BCF an opportunity to educate the staff on what we each offer the community and how best to utilise our services.
